Aloha Adventure: Part 1 – Kauai with Points & Perks

Our Hawaiian journey began with a strategic use of travel rewards, turning a dream vacation into a reality without breaking the bank.

Flights: Dallas to Kauai via Southwest

We flew from Dallas Love Field to Lihue, Kauai, on Southwest Airlines, redeeming 17,500 Rapid Rewards points for my ticket. Thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass, my husband flew free, covering only the taxes and fees. This benefit significantly reduced our travel expenses.

Stay: Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa

In Kauai, we spent three nights at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, a Category 6 property in the World of Hyatt program. We redeemed 30,000 points per night, totaling 90,000 points for our stay. As a Hyatt Globalist, we enjoyed complimentary access to the Grand Club Lounge, offering daily breakfast, afternoon snacks, evening hors d’oeuvres, and desserts. The resort's location also provided easy access to a nearby cliff trail, perfect for capturing breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. 

During our visit to Kauai, we embraced the island's natural beauty and adventurous spirit. Renting a car proved invaluable, allowing us to explore at our own pace and discover local gems off the beaten path.​

Surfing in Hanalei Bay

One of the highlights of our trip was a day spent surfing in the picturesque Hanalei Bay on the North Shore. The bay's gentle waves and stunning backdrop make it an ideal spot for both beginners and seasoned surfers. As the school day ended, local children joined us in the water, showcasing impressive skills and adding to the vibrant atmosphere. For those interested in lessons, local surf schools like Hanalei Surf School offer sessions tailored to all skill levels, providing an authentic and enjoyable experience. ​

Hiking Waimea Canyon

We also ventured to Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." The canyon's expansive views and vibrant colors are truly breathtaking. We chose to hike the Canyon Trail to Waipo'o Falls, a moderate trek that rewards hikers with stunning vistas of the canyon and a view of the 800-foot waterfall. However, it's essential to note that trails can become slippery during the rainy season, so proper footwear and caution are advised. ​ 

Relaxing at the Grand Hyatt Kauai

After our adventures, we took time to unwind at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa. The resort's lush landscapes, serene pools, and oceanfront views provided the perfect setting for relaxation. The air in Hawaii carries a unique tranquility, and lounging by the pool allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the island's peaceful ambiance.​

Inter-Island Travel: Kauai to Maui

Continuing our adventure, we booked a Southwest flight from Kauai to Maui for just 6,000 Rapid Rewards points per person. Southwest's inter-island service made island hopping both convenient and affordable.
